Kulai, The Turtle Town
Kulai gots it name after the floods, there will be many fish and turtle in the village and local people will shout “Gui lai liao!”. As a result, Kulai was called “Gui Lai” which means “turtles are coming”. However, because of the difficulties to spell the name (Gui Lai) in English, the name has been replaced to Kulai. Kulai is located 29 km from Johor Bahru city and 8km from Skudai. It's located in the center of the district. There are 10 towns within the district that are located along the old trunk road linking Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. The main road, Federal Route, is lined with many retail shops, 2 bus stations, Kulai Hospital, clinics, police station, post office, a secondary school and also the Kulaijaya Municipal Office. There are also many housing estates within the municipality which is surrounded by rubber and oil palm estates. The Chinese community is dominating the Kulai and Senai Town, meanwhile The Malay community mostly in the Felda scheme settlement.
